Professional soccer athlete Anton Walkes has passed away at the age of 25 after a tragic boating incident in Miami, Florida.
As reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Charlotte FC midfielder was discovered unconscious following a dual-boat crash close to the Miami Marine Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. He was provided CPR by Miami Fire Rescue and subsequently transported to a hospital, but he ultimately did not survive his injuries.
The Major League Soccer team expressed its heartbreak over the unfortunate news.
“He was an extraordinary son, father, partner, and teammate whose cheerful outlook on life influenced everyone he encountered,” lamented Charlotte FC owner David Tepper. “Anton elevated those around him in all aspects of life and exemplified Charlotte FC to the utmost degree, both on and off the field.”
Walkes was at the helm of one of the vessels involved in the incident.
The late midfielder was originally from England and launched his career with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur before being loaned to Atlanta United. He joined League One team Portsmouth in 2017, continuing there until he returned to Atlanta in 2020.
Walkes featured in 64 matches for ATL and was later chosen by Charlotte as the second selection in the 2021 MLS Expansion Draft.
“There are no words to adequately express the grief felt by everyone in Major League Soccer today upon hearing of the tragic passing of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC,” stated the MLS. “Anton was a skilled and committed player who was cherished by his teammates and supporters.”
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his partner, family, friends, and the entire Charlotte FC community.”
An inquiry is underway regarding the collision following the athlete’s demise.
