On Wednesday, Bay FC officially announced Matt Potter as their full-time sporting director, lifting the interim designation from his title and revising his responsibilities.
Potter joined Bay FC in December 2023 as the technical director before stepping into the role of head of football and interim sporting director in June, following the resignation of Lucy Rushton, the team’s inaugural general manager.
“We are excited to officially name Matt Potter our sporting director,” said Bay FC co-chair Alan Waxman. “He possesses a profound understanding of the women’s game and knows what it takes to cultivate a successful franchise, playing a crucial part in ensuring our first season was a triumph.”
Bay FC qualified for the NWSL playoffs as an expansion team in 2024, aided by a strong performance in the latter part of the season. The reshaping of the team was significantly influenced by the addition of Abby Dahlkemper, a 2019 World Cup winner and U.S. international centerback.
“2024 was an extraordinary year, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to build upon the foundation we laid in our inaugural season,” Potter remarked in a statement. “The club, staff, and fan base that supports Bay FC are truly exceptional, making it an honor to represent our badge.”
Previously, Potter served as the head coach for the Kansas City Current, where he led the team to an NWSL Championship appearance in 2022, although they were defeated by the Portland Thorns. He was released from his position shortly after the start of the 2023 season.
Before that, Potter worked as a scout for the United States women’s national team and held the position of head coach for the U.S. U-23 team.
With Potter officially taking the highest technical role at Bay FC, there are now four NWSL teams—Angel City FC, North Carolina Courage, Portland Thorns FC, and Racing Louisville FC—still looking to fill that position.
