Captain Virgil van Dijk states that his Liverpool colleagues grasp the significance of the rivalry with Manchester United and acknowledges that matches against the Red Devils at Anfield carry “that little bit of extra meaning for supporters.”

Liverpool is currently experiencing a remarkable run during Arne Slot’s inaugural season at the helm. Slot’s team holds the top position in the Premier League and has the opportunity to extend their lead to eight points with a game in hand when they face United on Sunday.

In contrast, their long-standing rivals, managed by Ruben Amorim, are having a challenging season. Although they triumphed over Manchester City, United has suffered three consecutive league defeats without finding the back of the net, conceding a total of seven goals during that span.

Presently, United occupies the 14th spot in the standings, with Amorim recently acknowledging that his squad is engaged in a struggle to avoid relegation.

In his remarks for the official matchday programme, the Dutch defender expressed that he anticipates a rigorous challenge at Anfield and acknowledges the added weight of the occasion.

“Every game is significant when you play for this club,” Van Dijk noted. “However, a match at Anfield against United definitely has that little bit of extra significance for supporters.”

“We comprehend this rivalry and recognize that a special atmosphere will be present, which we intend to leverage as we pursue the three points.”

“Let there be no illusion, this will be a challenging test. We are aware that United is not where they aspire to be in the league and have had a tough start to the season, but they still possess quality players, so it’s crucial that we remain sharp and focused from the very start.”

The Reds’ captain also reflected on a solid first half of the season but emphasized that there is more work ahead.

“We understand what success hinges upon. Quality, certainly, but also humility, sacrifice, work ethic, and unity. If we keep that at the forefront of our minds, then those attributes will lead us to our ambitions.”

“The foundation we have established in the initial months of the season is evident, but we must consistently build from this point.”

“We are not caught up in the league standings or tallying possible future points. Our focus is solely on the next match, the upcoming challenge. Consistency remains essential, both daily and from game to game.”
