Soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo is allegedly facing a punishment of 99 lashes in Iran after being accused of “fornication” within the country. These charges emerged when Ronaldo was seen embracing and kissing artist Fatima Hamimi on the cheek while thanking her for two artworks she made for him.
In Iran, making any form of physical contact with an unmarried woman while in a relationship is perceived as an indication of infidelity, resulting in a punishment of 99 lashes. Ronaldo, who represents Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, released footage of the event, which triggered various legal proceedings against him.
Since 2016, Ronaldo has been in a relationship with Georgina Rodriguez, and they have two kids together. The affectionate moment between Ronaldo and Hamimi occurred during his visit to Tehran with his team to face Persepolis in an Asian Champions League group stage match.
Fatima Hamimi, the artist who was embraced and kissed by Ronaldo, is 85 percent paralyzed and creates art with her feet. During his visit, she was one of many fans who presented gifts to the Portuguese football star.
Although Al-Nassr will not be obligated to compete in Iran again in the group stage, a return may occur if both teams proceed to the knockout rounds. If the actions are deemed non-punishable or if Ronaldo shows remorse, a judge might consider granting him mercy, according to the Spanish news agency Marca.
