USWNT coach Emma Hayes shared insights on her transition from Chelsea to the helm of the United States national team, indicating that the pressures of her prior position had adversely affected her health. During a press conference in Camden, London, on Monday, Hayes openly discussed the toll that her years at Chelsea took on her well-being and the revitalizing impact of her current role.
“I feel like I’ve got my mojo back and my smile back and joy back that I didn’t realize how much I’d lost in that,” Hayes remarked, as reported by ESPN correspondent Emily Keogh. “I definitely didn’t feel healthy at the end. I just felt unwell, not because of pressure, but the stress — the toll it took on me.”
Hayes resigned as Chelsea’s manager in 2024 after an impressive 12-year tenure, during which she secured five consecutive Women’s Super League titles, solidifying her status as one of the leading coaches in women’s football. She was also honored with the prestigious Ballon d’Or Coach of the Year award, marking a significant milestone in her celebrated career.
Emma Hayes has spearheaded the USWNT’s resurgence
Assuming control of the USWNT following their disappointing round-of-16 exit from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Hayes has managed a remarkable turnaround. Under her guidance, the USWNT won gold at the 2024 Olympics and has experienced a profound reconstruction. Hayes noted that her new role has rekindled her passion for the sport and helped her find personal equilibrium.
“I didn’t know what to expect. I was a little bit afraid — how’s this rhythm going to affect me? I’m so used to getting in the car, driving to the training ground, working six, seven days a week,” Hayes admitted. “But now I get to take my son to school, go to the gym, and create my schedule. I don’t sacrifice the things that make me feel healthy.”
Hayes and the USWNT are gearing up for their next challenge — an eagerly awaited matchup against European champions England on November 30 at Wembley Stadium. This match will be Hayes’ first encounter with England in her capacity as USWNT head coach. The last meeting between the two teams was in October 2022, where England took the victory with a score of 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley.
For Hayes, her new role transcends mere victories; it has been a journey of self-discovery.
