Emma Hayes delivered on her promise of first-time debuts. Her roster choices certainly impressed.
The U.S. women’s national team secured a 3-1 victory over Iceland on Sunday evening in Nashville, marking the second of two friendlies against the European team. Last week, the U.S. faced Iceland in Austin, Texas, where they similarly clinched a 3-1 win.
This match saw two players achieving their first international caps with the senior squad. Emily Sams made her start in defense, following an impressive season with the Orlando Pride. In addition, rookie forward Emma Sears from Racing Louisville made her debut in the latter part of the game, netting a goal during stoppage time.
Lynn Williams and Lindsey Horan contributed goals within a five-minute span in the second half, turning the game in favor of the U.S.
The event also paid tribute to Kelley O’Hara, who announced her retirement from women’s soccer this year. The 36-year-old defender addressed the audience during halftime. O’Hara has made 160 appearances for the national team and was part of the teams that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019. Additionally, she secured a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal in Tokyo.
Another honoree was Mallory Swanson, celebrated for her 100th cap.
