A fixture in the English Premier League between Bournemouth and Luton Town was interrupted after Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch during the second half.
Lockyer, a defender, suffered a cardiac arrest and was rapidly taken to the hospital, eliciting worry among players and fans.
Thankfully, Luton Town has confirmed that Lockyer is in stable condition.
“Our medical team has verified that the Hatters captain suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, but he was conscious by the time he was taken off on the stretcher,” the club communicated to fans in a statement. “He received further treatment at the stadium, for which we continue to express our thanks to the medical staff from both teams.
“Tom was transported to the hospital, and we assure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his side.”
The score was tied at 1-1 in the 59th minute when Lockyer collapsed without any physical interaction from other players. Luton manager Rob Edwards responded swiftly, promptly calling for medical assistance.
After six minutes, the players left the field as it became understandably impossible to proceed, leading to the match being abandoned.
Lockyer, 29, had previously fainted during Luton’s playoff final victory against Coventry City on May 27. He spent five days in the hospital and underwent surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation.
