Brazilian football star Neymar has been the subject of speculation regarding a move to Major League Soccer after a disappointing period with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, it appears that he will return to his roots: Santos FC.
Respected soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano shared this development on social media on Monday, announcing that Al Hilal has terminated their contract with Neymar, who is set to head back to Brazil to finalize his reunion with his childhood club.
“Al Hilal have terminated Ney’s contract with immediate effect as the Brazilian will now travel for medical and sign on as the new Santos player. Back to Santos, back to Vila Belmiro. Ney volta pra casa,” Romano stated.
During his time at Al Hilal, Neymar had limited opportunities, netting just one goal in seven appearances.
Santos FC is expected to formally introduce him to their supporters on Thursday or Friday, according to ESPN Brazil. To facilitate his return, Neymar has agreed to forfeit between $25 million and $30 million from the $65 million remaining on his contract with Al Hilal, which is set to run through next summer.
Why Neymar’s return to Santos FC is significant
The years 2023 and 2024 have been challenging for Neymar, primarily due to injuries.
Last year was particularly difficult for him as he suffered a torn ACL during a FIFA World Cup Qualifier match against Uruguay in October, which sidelined him for an entire year. He only returned to play last October but then faced a hamstring injury.
Neymar’s agreement with Santos FC reflects his intent to reconnect with his origins, playing for the club that nurtured his talent into what it is today.
He was a key player in Santos FC’s 2011 Copa Libertadores victory, scoring in the second leg of the final against Peñarol, leading to a 2-1 triumph. Additionally, he helped the team reach the FIFA Club World Cup final that same year, although they were defeated by Lionel Messi’s Barcelona 4-0. Between 2009 and 2013, Neymar scored 107 goals in 177 matches for the club.
Santos FC celebrated a successful campaign, winning the Brazilian Serie B title in 2024 and securing promotion to the top division for the upcoming season, meaning Neymar will be competing at the elite level in Brazil.
This move also positions him for a potential return to the national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers starting in March, where he holds the record for the most goals scored for Brazil with 79 and counting. His first matches back will be against Colombia and Argentina.
The year 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the Brazilian superstar, as he aims to showcase to soccer fans once again that he is among the sport’s elite players.
