The income produced from the 2022 FIFA World Cup seems to be too alluring for the federation’s president to desire waiting another four years.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Gianni Infantino aims to organize the championship every three years, having previously supported a suggestion for it to occur every two years. The latter suggestion was discarded, with UEFA and Conmebol effectively opposing it; however, Infantino is revisiting the idea after witnessing the success of the most recent event.
While he was unable to garner backing from athletes, teams, and global federations, the FIFA president has proclaimed that a larger edition of the world’s foremost tournament will take place in 2025.
According to the article, Infantino is firm in his belief that hosting the World Cup during a European winter was a “game-changer.”
The latest event in Qatar brought in $8.19 billion, surpassing the $1.01 billion earned by the prior World Cup, which occurred in Russia. Such figures would likely persuade anyone in Infantino’s position that it would be advantageous to host the World Cup more often.
Regrettably for Infantino, modifications to the World Cup cannot take place until after 2030, as discussions among stakeholders regarding the 2024-2030 international calendar are nearing completion, although dialogues about the new proposal appear to be occurring discreetly.
