Tottenham’s head coach Ange Postecoglou stated that he “cannot flip a switch and change” his tactical approach after his team faced boos at the conclusion of their 6-3 home loss to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Despite scoring more goals than any other club in the league, Spurs find themselves in 11th position in the table, trailing fourth place by eight points, having secured just one point from their last four home league matches.

In response to a suggestion that his team could adopt a more cautious style, Postecoglou emphasized, “I think I’ve been really, really patient over the last 18 months, answering the same question over and over again.”

“If people want me to change my approach, it’s not going to change. We’re doing it for a reason because we think it’ll help us be successful.”

Tottenham vs Liverpool ‘a bridge too far’

This season, Tottenham has also suffered a 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, along with a 4-3 home loss to Chelsea despite having a 2-0 advantage in both encounters.

At one point during their tough match against the league leaders, the score was 5-1 against them, a situation exacerbated by Postecoglou missing 10 players due to injuries and illnesses.

“It was a bridge too far for us, in terms of you could tell that we were lacking a bit of energy and the capacity to compete with [Liverpool] on the same level,” Postecoglou commented.

“If people don’t understand the circumstances we’re facing at the moment and the challenges that are presented to us as a team and a squad… I get that some may believe I should just flip the switch and change to become a different team. But it is what it is – I’m going to remain focused on building this team into what we aim to achieve.”

“In the meantime, we must acknowledge the challenges we are encountering. Who knows? Maybe some of [the fans] do comprehend our situation right now.

“It feels like many do not. In light of what we aim to do and our current position, I sincerely hope they recognize the vision we’re working towards, as I truly believe it will deliver what the fans and the club desire. But ultimately, that’s up to them.”

    Postecoglou: ‘Others to judge’

Postecoglou underscored the importance of fan support and expressed confidence when discussing his future with the team.

“We’ve had shorter turnarounds than almost every team we’ve faced so far, whether it’s been here or in Europe,” he stated. “I’ve not been able to rest or rotate players.”

“If you’re implying that [11th place] means I’m not performing well and should feel uncomfortable, then that’s for others to assess.”
