Houston Dash Shine Bright in NWSL Opener, Signs For A Promising Season Ahead

The last time the Houston Dash tasted victory in their season opener was back in 2017. That memorable match saw club icons Kealia Watt and Rachel Daly lead the charge, securing a 2-1 triumph over the Chicago Red Stars. Unfortunately, this past Friday echoed that earlier defeat, as the Dash found themselves on the losing end again, this time with a score of 2-1 to the Washington Spirit. It appears that a frustrating pattern is continuing for a team that has long been striving for rebirth.

Yet, despite the familiar sting of defeat, the narrative of this season holds an intriguing twist. The Dash’s performance on the pitch suggests that, for the first time in a while, they could be beginning to find their footing and purpose. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect an immediate triumph, the groundwork is being laid for something greater.

One match into the season, it’s clear that this year is shaping up to be a markedly different experience from the last one. In the previous year, Houston took a bold leap by hiring head coach Fran Alonso. His ambitious vision revolved around instilling a “brave, exciting, dynamic and dominant style of play,” which he had successfully implemented at Celtic FC in Scotland. However, that vision didn’t quite translate on U.S. soil, as the team struggled to adapt. Players were often out of their preferred positions, which led to disjointed, ineffective soccer. A disheartening opening match, a 5-1 loss to the North Carolina Courage, served as an ominous signaling of the rocky journey ahead.

Sure, Alonso’s approach was thrilling; excitement was in the air. But for the loyal Dash supporters who filled the stands week after week, it was excitement tinged with disappointment. Fans craved a cohesive strategy, something they could rally behind, rather than aimless play that left them scratching their heads.

From there, the situation took a swift turn. Just three months into the season and after no significant progress, Alonso’s departure left a void that needed to be filled. By October, Houston turned the page and brought in Fabrice Gautrat, who immediately brought a different perspective to the team. His philosophy was refreshingly tangible. Instead of chasing entertainment and style for its own sake, Gautrat focused on nurturing a culture of improvement, emphasizing the importance of training and accountability among the players. He believed in laying down a foundation that prioritized clarity in every game scenario—essentially, transforming the Dash into a well-oiled machine. Where Alonso prioritized form, Gautrat was all about function.

The shift in mindset isn’t just about tactics; it’s about building a community around the team, fostering a sense of trust and consistency that players and fans alike can believe in. It’s that reassuring quality that transforms a struggling team into a cohesive unit—and that’s what new beginnings are all about. For any longtime supporter, seeing how Gautrat communicates with the players and the genuine positivity surrounding the locker room gives reason to hope.

As the Dash continue to rise from the ashes of previous disappointments, it’s crucial for fans to hold onto this vision of growth. The loss on opening day may sting, but the signs of progress offer a glimmer of promise that something special is brewing for the team. It’s about igniting the passion of the players, fostering unity, and importantly, building a culture that lends itself to success in the long run. Each match is a step forward, and in the world of sports, all it takes is a spark of potential to set a team ablaze.
