Lily Yohannes made her decision last week to represent the U.S. women’s national team instead of the Netherlands. She has now been included in the newest 24-player U.S. roster for the first time since scoring in her debut in June.
Yohannes is among five players on the roster who play their club football in Europe. The other four are goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United), defender Emily Fox (Arsenal), defender Eva Gaetino (Paris Saint-Germain), and midfielder Korbin Albert (Paris Saint-Germain).
The five players will not need to travel far, as the U.S. is set to compete against England and the Netherlands in Europe in the upcoming weeks. Over 70,000 tickets have already been sold for the U.S. match against England at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Nov. 30. Additionally, the U.S. will take on Yohannes’ former national team recruiter, the Netherlands, on Dec. 3.
The U.S. roster further includes two players yet to earn caps: Tullis-Joyce and forward Ally Sentor, who is a contender for the National Women’s Soccer League Rookie of the Year award.
Due to what the U.S. has described as “nagging injuries,” the team will be missing Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Smith for the friendlies. Rodman recently helped her club, the Washington Spirit, qualify for the 2024 NWSL Championship and played all 120 minutes in a penalty-kick victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC.
“In terms of our schedule, this is the end of a wonderful year, but we’re still at the beginning of our process of building towards qualifying for the next World Cup,” U.S. coach Emma Hayes stated. “So, this trip will be about testing ourselves against two world-class teams with opportunities to develop our roster. We will continue to build relationships on and off the field and I’m really excited to work with this group as we continue to set the stage for 2025.”
In the October friendly window — where the U.S. faced and defeated Iceland twice and Argentina — seven players received their first caps under Hayes. All players—Hal Hershfelt, Emily Sams, Alyssa Malonson, Yazmeen Ryan, Emma Sears, Mandy Haught, and Gaetino—are returning for this final camp of the year.
