Premier League frontrunners Liverpool secured another victory against Manchester City on Sunday, defeating them 2-0 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah made significant contributions by assisting Cody Gakpo for the opening goal and later converting a penalty in the second half.
Following the match, the Egyptian star offered a vague remark regarding his future amidst ongoing contract disputes, suggesting that it might be the “last time” he faced Pep Guardiola’s squad at Anfield.
According to ESPN:
“Honestly, it’s in my head. Until now this is the last City game I will play for Liverpool so I was just going to enjoy it. The atmosphere was incredible so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully, we just win the league and will see what will happen.”
Last week, Salah expressed that he feels he is “more out than in” at Liverpool currently:
“Well, we are almost in December, and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah remarked after the win against Southampton.
“You know now I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end, it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.
“I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end, it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see. Of course [no offer is disappointing], yeah.”
Allowing Salah to depart would be a significant loss for Liverpool. He stands out as their top player, having already scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 13 league matches this season. His contributions are a major factor in Liverpool holding a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
While recent updates indicate that there has been some advancement in contract discussions over the past few months, Salah himself does not seem particularly optimistic about finalizing a new agreement. Several clubs in Saudi Arabia are showing interest in him, but he has expressed no intention of playing in the Middle East.
The Liverpool forward will be eligible to negotiate with teams outside the Premier League starting January 1. His current contract is set to expire next summer. Clearly, the Reds would be unwise to allow him to leave.
