The chief executive of Rangers has expressed his support for manager Philippe Clement, even as the team struggles to close the gap on dominant rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season.
Celtic’s win against Ross County on Saturday widened their lead at the top of Scottish football to 18 points. However, Rangers have the chance to reduce that margin to 15 if they secure a victory against St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday.
With only three wins out of 11 away matches in the league this season, Clement has faced criticism from fans, yet Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart has confirmed that the board stands by the Belgian manager.
In contrast, Clement’s squad has performed better in the Europa League, where they are currently in eighth place. The 50-year-old coach achieved his first win in an Old Firm derby on January 2, leading his team to a 3-0 victory over their bitter rivals.

“I need to make some tough decisions, it comes with the role, but I am committed to making the right ones for Rangers, not just the popular ones,” Stewart commented.
“As a board, we are supporting Philippe at this time. It’s important to take a thorough look at the issues, tackle those challenges, and maintain our focus on creating a stronger future for the club. Changing a manager is not a quick-fix solution.”
Stewart also announced that a “root and branch review of the entire football department” would take place at Rangers.
The former Manchester United CEO, who began his role at Ibrox less than a month ago, indicated that the review, starting on Monday, would involve external assistance and is expected to last between six to twelve weeks.
He further acknowledged that the club plans to bring in “one or two” players during the upcoming January transfer window.
